Burlington too much for Eagle boys, who come back strong Saturday to beat Ten Sleep

Feb 17, 2014 - By Randy Tucker, Sports Writer

It was a roller coaster weekend for the St. Stephen's Eagles in Northwest 1-A Conference action. The Eagles ran into an offensive buzzsaw Friday in Burlington with the Huskies lighting up the visitors 93-51. It was the most points scored by Burlington this season.

St. Stephen's guard Derrick Williams tallied a career high 32 points on Saturday to lead the Eagles past visiting Ten Sleep 68-57.

The Eagles finished 3-5 in conference play and await a final weekend game between Dubois and Meeteetse to determine if they'll take the third tournament seed or play a Monday pigtail game against the fifth seed from the Southwest next Monday.

Friday's game was a mismatch for the Eagles from the start against a very balanced Burlington team that has only one loss against Class 3-A Buffalo early in the season.

Burlington had 10 players score in the contest, led by Preston Wardell's 18 points.

For the Eagles Jaron Arthur had 14 ,with Johnny Whiteman and Williams scoring 10 each.

Williams was hot from all over the floor Saturday. He hit a layup and the first of his four 3-pointers in the opening period, then tallied 14 of his team's 20 second-period points, including a pair of long-range bombs from beyond the arc.

St. Stephen's held a five-point lead at the half , then pulled away slowly in the final two period for the win.

Brandon C'Hair also had a solid night offensively, with most of his 17 points coming in the paint.

The Eagles have one final game against Arapahoe Charter this week to round out the regular season, then await the final standings to determine their tournament berth in Lander the following week.
