Freshman's idol reads his fan letter on national TV

Feb 21, 2014 - By Kelli Ameling, Staff Writer

Nick Nerli said he was "shocked" when his idol read his letter on national television.

In December, the Lander Valley High School freshman class president wrote to Bill O'Reilly to express his appreciation for O'Reilly's opinions.

O'Reilly is the host of "The O'Reilly Factor" on Fox News. According to his biography, he is also an author, a syndicated columnist and a political commentator.

"For quite a while, I have been intrigued by Bill O'Reilly's intelligence expressed through educational literature," Nerli said. "I felt it was necessary to e-mail Mr. O'Reilly and express my sincere thanks for affecting my life's choices through leadership."

Nerli said he had no idea O'Reilly would read his letter, let alone put it on "The O'Reilly Factor."

Nerli's e-mail was short and sweet.

"Mr. O'Reilly, I am the freshman-class president at Lander Valley High School, and I truly enjoy your books," Nerli wrote. "I have benefited from your leadership."

According to Nerli, O'Reilly's suggestions and opinions have affected Nerli's way of perceiving information, and he has found it positive to be able to use the skills while "pondering several different options."

"Through Bill O'Reilly's philosophy, I believe that I have been able to make decisions that benefit others and myself," Nerli said.

Nerli's favorite O'Reilly book is "Pinheads and Patriots: Living in the Age of Obama." He said he finds it inspirational.

"I really appreciate that, Nick," O'Reilly said on his show. "Merry Christmas and happy holidays to everybody in Lander."

Nerli said he was "honored and pleased" that O'Reilly found his e-mail encouraging.
