CASPER -- The conference-leading Casper Natrona Fillies girls basketball team (16-4, 8-0 Class 4-A West) used a high-pressure, full-court defense to jump to an early lead and dominated the Riverton Lady Wolverines 84-39 Thursday evening in Casper.
The game was the final girls game that will be played in the "Orange Dungeon," also known as Jerry Dalton Court at Natrona County High School. The Fillies will play their games next season in a temporary gym at NCHS while their current gym will undergo major reconstruction.
The loss for Riverton (9-11, 3-4 Class 4-A West) puts its conference record below .500 and sets up an important home game Saturday against the Casper Kelly Walsh Lady Trojans. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
"I thought we came out a little bit scared, and then it went from being scared to being tentative, and those are bad elements against a strong defensive team," Riverton head coach Ron Porter said.
The Fillies limited Riverton to just one field goal in the first quarter and caused five consecutive turnovers to run off 10 consecutive early-game points.
NCHS senior Gabby Johnson led all scorers with 19 while Stanford-bound Kaylee Johnson added 15. Emily Robertson also scored in double figures for the Fillies with 14. All three of NC's leading scorers are 6 feet or taller.
"We got rattled. But we battled the whole way through. But you know what, it has no bearing on where we are headed. Our most important date now is tomorrow's practice. Every single player on our team needs to make it difficult defensively against Casper Kelly Walsh," Porter said.
When asked whether he will miss coaching games in the Orange Dungeon, Porter said, "I will. I think it is a great gym. It is what I think a gym is all about. There is so much history there just like there is in our old gym (at the old Riverton High School)."
