Rustler women top Sheridan; men end regular year with loss

Feb 24, 2014 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Coming next up for the CWC teams is the Region IX tournament.

Freshman McKenley Hellstern sealed victory for the Central Wyoming College Lady Rustler on two free throws in the final seconds to complete the season sweep over Sheridan College 73-69 Saturday afternoon at Rustler Gym.

CWC fell to Sheridan in the men's game 70-62.

The two games completed the regular season for the Rustlers.

"The only way that you can make things better is if you give us two points at Casper," CWC women's head coach Serol Stauffenberg said. "Other than that, we are playing as well as we have all year."

The two CWC teams now focus on the Region IX men's and women's basketball tournaments.

The official parings will be announced early next week.

The first half was a high-scoring one, as CWC ran out to a 42-32 halftime cushion.

"We both shot the ball very well in the first half," Stauffenberg said.

Madison Forney caused problems for CWC's defense in the first 20 minutes. The former Rawlins standout center finished the game at 30 points.

"We had a tough time getting around her," Stauffenberg said. "She uses her body well."

In the second half, CWC double-teamed Forney.

"We had all kinds of help on her," Stauffenberg said. "They had a tough time getting her the ball."

CWC's biggest lead was 14 points.

"I knew that Sheridan was going to fight back," Stauffenberg said.

Sure enough, Sheridan hit a deep 3-pointer, but CWC won the game at the line, hitting 13 of 16 shots.

Hellstern scored 20 points for the Rustlers, and Tina Hosea had 15.

The Rustlers didn't back down from the physical Sheridan College for the entire 40 minutes, but Sheridan maintained a seven- to 10-point cushion most of the way.

The Rustler never could make a late run to take the lead.

Daryle Morgan Jr. continued his outstanding season for CWC, leading all scorers with 20 points. Matt Johnson had a solid afternoon with 11.

Former Riverton High School all-state player Xavier Webb scored one point late in the game on a free throw.
