Cold start dooms Dubois girls in 'pigtail' hoops loss

Feb 25, 2014 - By Randy Tucker, Sports Writer

In the other pigtail game, it was the Sothwest winning again, as Farson-Eden outlasted Ten Sleep 36-30.

It was a quick exit for the Dubois Lady Rams from the Class 1-A West regional Monday afternoon in Lander in play-in "pigtail" action against Hanna Elk Mountain.

Dubois fell 59-28 to the Miners and were eliminated from further postseason play.

It didn't take HEM long to take control of the game.

Darby Bowen drained a pair of long 3-pointers early in the opening period to fuel a 15-0 start by the Miners. Dubois finally scored on a follow shot by Emily Smith with 1:22 remaining in the first. She hit another shot a few seconds later, but the Rams were in trouble, trailing 20-4 after one quarter.

The second was more of the same, as Dubois dribbled or passed around the perimeter but was unable to penetrate within 15 feet for an open shot.

Hanna Elk Mountain scored in transition or on one-on-one moves by sophomore guard Haley Clark.

Clark led all scorers with 17 points and was a nemesis for the Rams throughout the second half off the dribble drive and the jump shot.

Dubois was more balanced in the second quarter, with Kaitlin Hudson hitting a trey, and baskets by Smith and Katelyn Suda, but the Miners pulled ahead to take a 33-12 lead at the half.

The second half was much better offensively for the Rams as HEM rotated players in and out constantly, but the deficit was too great.

Shelby Horn scored all of her team-high nine points in the fourth, period with Katelyn Suda hitting a 3-pointer and a follow shot to account for 14 of DHS's 16 second-half points.

The Miners advance to play top seeded Burlington at 7 p.m. Thursday.

In the other pigtail game it was the Southwest winning again, as Farson-Eden outlasted Ten Sleep 36-30.

The Pronghorns play Southwest champion Little Snake River at 3:40 pm in the auxiliary gym at Lander Valley High School.
