Feb 26, 2014 - By Alejandra Silva, Staff WriterThe Fremont County School District 25 Recreation Board awarded roughly $210,000 this year for organizations serving District 25 patrons. The money is generated from a 1-mill levy authorized by state legislation.
The top three awards this year are $36,000 to the Riverton Aquatic Center, $34,000 to R Recreation, and $30,000 to the Central Wyoming Skateboarding Association.
This was the first time the board awarded money to CWSA, which had requested funding last year. Board president Lee Martinez said the skateboard group came before the board this year with more concrete plans for its proposed skate park.
Also awarded major funding this year were the Fremont County Racing Association -- $10,000; CDS Playground -- $9,742; and Riverton Girls Fast Pitch Softball -- $8,777. Another new request was from the Central Wyoming Children's Center for Art, Technology and Science, which was approved for $9,435. The money would cover the construction of 13 exhibits at the center expected to open in Riverton this year.
Several other applicants received smaller amounts. About $227,000 was requested.
"We didn't turn anybody down this year," Martinez said.
