Seesaw game tips late for Rams in 1-A first rounder

Feb 28, 2014 - By Randy Tucker, Sports Writer

It was a game of surges Thursday night, with Dubois taking the final one to edge Encampment 65-58 in Class 1-A West regional tournament play at Lander Valley High School.

The win sent the Rams to a 4:10 pm semifinal contest against top-seed Little Snake River on the main floor at Bob Carey Memorial Fieldhouse.

Dubois rolled in the opening minutes to a 12-0 lead using a big height advantage over the Tigers. 6-foot-6 senior post Austin Tharp scored off the opening tip, and Nathan Moore hit a 3-pointer to build a 5-0 lead in the first minute of the game.

Walker Carrico and Tharp continued to pound away in the paint before Encampment's Luke Pantle broke open to hit a 3-pointer.

The shot rallied the Tigers, and Guy Erickson tallied five more points to cut the margin to eight.

Pantle dominated Dubois in an early season 20-point loss at Encampment. This time, Dubois head coach Mike Carrico stacked defenders high and low on him each time he tried to penetrate in the halfcourt.

"We figured out what to do with Pantle," Carrico said.

Dubois led 19-9 after one, but the pace slowed in the second period with both teams playing very deliberately on offense.

Dubois built a 15-point advantage, but Pantle hit a pair of 3-pointers to close the game to nine with 1:21 left in the half.

In Class 1-A the rosters aren't as deep as in the larger divisions, so fouls take on an even more important role in a game. Ryan Eulberg fouled out for Dubois with 6:38 left in the fourth period, and Pantle picked up his fifth just 13 seconds later for Encampment.

Holding a seven-point lead with Encampment's leading scorer on the bench led to a defensive lapse by the Rams.

Encampment picked up the defensive pressure and slapped a full court press on the Rams. While it didn't produce transition layups off turnovers it did lead to a 10-second call on the rams with 1:49 left in the game.

Erickson hit a 3-pointer with 1:39 left, and the margin closed to a single point at 56-55 .

Dubois was on the verge of self destructing in the face of a furious Tiger comeback. Tharp snagged an offensive rebound off a missed free throw and put the ball in for a 58-55 lead, but Harold Jackson hit a trey with 1:00 left to knot the game at 58.

The Rams went to the paint. Tharp was pulled backward on a short jump shot but hit both ensuing free throws. The Rams held defensively, and a loose ball sailed out of bounds near the Encampment bench. Kolter Leseberg broke open on a curl route off a sideline inbounds play to hit a layup with 28 seconds remaining, and the Rams led 62-48.

Moore hit a final layup and following free throw to cap a final 7-0 Dubois run.

Tharp paced the Rams with 27, Carrico added 16, Leseberg 12 and Moore 10.

Pantle led Encampment with 16, Erickson scored 15, Jackson and Jared Stewart added 11.
