Wind River girls down Greybull, earn semifinal tournament slot Friday

Feb 28, 2014 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

A big step toward the state tournament was taken Thursday by the Wind River Lady Cougars in a 65-57 win against Greybull in the opening round of the Class 2-A West tournament in Riverton.

The game was played before a packed crowd at Center Wyoming College.

"Greybull is an athletic team," Wind River coach Justin Walker said. "They are a much improved team. We knew that Greybull wasn't going to roll over just because we are Wind River."

The win moved Wind River into a semifinal game Friday with Lovell at Wolverine Gym in Riverton.

"Our girls are excited about it," Walker said.

The winner advances into the championship game on Saturday afternoon.

Neither team could take control in the first periods of play.

"The first half was back and forth," Walker said. "It was a high-pressure game with a lot of body contact."

Wind River was the No. 2 seed from the Southwest conference, and Greybull came in as the No. 3 seed out of the Northwest.

"Greybull came out and really fought for us," Walker said.

Wind River's Alexa Wagon drilled four 3-pointers, all coming when the game was still close.

"Alexa played a solid game," Walker said. "She controlled the game for us. She made good choices in her shooting."

A game-changing possession came in the third quarter when Wind River's Lexy Brown was fouled going to the basket and her shot dropped.

Brown missed the free throw, but teammate Josee Vogel put back the offensive rebound for two points for a comfortable 52-40 lead.

"I think that any of our offensive rebounds were critical for us," Walker said.

In the final quarter, Greybull put on a full-court press, but Wind River kept on breaking it for layups or trips to the foul line.

"Our experience helped us, and making sure that we had control of ourselves," Walker said. "We made great passes and were able to make solid baskets."

Vogel had 20 points. Wagon scored 16 and Macayla Arrington 10.
