Comeback win for St. Stephen's girls Thursday in 1-A tournament

Feb 28, 2014 - By Randy Tucker, Sports Writer

It was a roller coaster ride for the St. Stephen's girls in opening round Class 1-A West girls basketball action Thursday at Lander Valley High School.

The Eagles survived an incredibly cold shooting third quarter to take a hard-fought 49-44 win over Encampment.

The win advances the Eagles to a 7:30 p.m. Friday semifinal contest against Little Snake River.

It was tight from the opening tip, with Encampment building a brief 12-6 lead on Cassidy Little's 3-pointer with 1:44 left in the first quarter.

St. Stephen's answered on a 6-0 run, with Faylynn Addison, Uriah Addison and Rachelle Lynch all hitting shots in the final minutes of the first to tie the game at 12.

A pair of ties and three lead changes highlighted an exciting second period. St. Stephen's built its largest lead of the opening half on a Marcel Oldman layup off an assist from Uriah Addison at 21-16, but Encampment answered with Alyssa Barkhurst's pair of free throws and a layup.

A Bailey Miller jump shot with 21 seconds left in the half closed the game to 23-22 at intermission.

A pair of early lead changes marked the end of consistent St. Stephen's scoring for a long time. The Eagles had point-blank shots again and again but missed all of them, as Encampment took a seven-point lead on back-to-back treys by Konnar Knotwell.

Trailing 38-31 entering the final period and missing shot after shot, it didn't look good for the Eagles.

But Little fouled out for Encampment with 7:16 left in the game, and the Tigers were unbalanced offensively for the remained of the game.

Marcel Oldman hit a 3-pointer to close the game to 38-34, Camile Whiteman converted a free throw, and Kayle Addison scored off a fast break to cut the margin to one point.

Lynch tied the game at 39 on a follow shot, but the Eagles fouled Miller and Barkhurst on back-to-back possessions, and they hit a combined two free throws. Lynch tied the game again on a driving shot off the glass for a final time at 41.

Oldman sparked a late 6-0 Eagle run with a layup off a power drive with 40 seconds remaining. Encampment called timeout, but Oldman stole the ensuing inbounds pass for another layup then finished the surge with another steal and score to give the Eagles a 47-41 advantage before a boisterously partisan St. Stephen's crowd.

Encampment hit three free throws in the final seconds, but the Eagles had the win.

Lynch paced St. Stephen's with 16, Oldman had 13.

Little's 17 points led Encampment, while Barkhurst finished with 10.
