In game played mostly by subs, Evanston nips RHS boys 51-50

Riverton opens the regional tournament Thursday vs. Evanston.

The Riverton Wolverine boys basketball fell to the Evanston Red Devils 51-50 in the final regular season game Monday evening at Wolverine Gym.

The game had been postponed from Saturday due to weather conditions and, because Riverton and Evanston were guaranteed to finish in the fourth and fifth slots in league standings, each team had agreed to rest their top players and battle primarily with reserves and sub-varsity players.

Junior guards Chris Quayle and Brandon Fullerton, both starters normally, suited but did not play for Riverton, and starters Austin Patterson and Caleb Ogg played just a few minutes in the first quarter.

"Coach Quayle and I talked before the game. I actually played some starters a little more than I wanted to," Evanston coach Roy Barker said.

Senior guard Eion Meyers had a spectacular shooting night for Riverton, scoring a career-high 24 points and hitting a season-high six 3-pointers to pace the Wolverines. His final trey with 24 seconds left to play knotted the score at 50-50, but Evanston's Miles Piper made one of two free throws with .9 second on the clock to give the Red Devils the win.

"We played really well and put ourselves in a great position to win. I thought the kids played well, and it was a good experience for those younger kids and the kids that have not got to play a lot," Riverton head coach Dick Quayle said.

Throughout the game, Riverton often had had three freshmen on the court, Teron Doebele, Brady Fullerton and Easton Paxton.

Free-throw shooting was the difference Monday. The Red Devils hit 15-21 while the Wolverines were just 1-2.

The Wolverines open Class 4-A West regional tournament play Thursday at Casper Kelly Walsh, again against Evanston. The winner of that game will qualify for the state tournament and continue play Friday and Saturday, while the loser's season will end.
