Mileto's career-high 30 not enough; Cowgirls fall 84-80 to Utah State

Mar 5, 2014 - From staff reports

LARAMIE -- Despite a career high 30 points from Kaitlyn Mileto and a double-double from Fallon Lewis, the Wyoming basketball team fell short 84-80 against the Utah State Aggies on senior night in Laramie. The Cowgirls are now 19-9 overall on the season and 10-7 in the Mountain West while the Aggies are now 14-15 overall and 8-10 in league play.

"I told the team before we went out tonight, because there is so much emotion involved with senior night to be there for one another and make sure you put everyth

ing on the line," said head coach Joe Legerski. "Then at the end I joked with Fallon that she needed to start rebounding again because she hadn't been the last couple of games. She showed up with 24 points and 15 rebounds. That's what you ask of a senior and she answered the call. We went to her at the end and got her a great play and the shot didn't fall. Some of what happened tonight was missed opportunities."

Mileto finished her night with a career high 30 points followed by Fallon Lewis with her tenth double-double of the season with 24 points and 15 rebounds. Marquelle Dent recorded nine points followed by Woodward with eight.

The Cowgirls shot 34.4 percent (21-61) from the field and 70.0 percent (28-40) from the free throw line. They had 20 points in the paint and 11 second chance points.

Utah State was led by Jennifer Schlott with 31 points while shooting 12-19 from the field and 5-7 from beyond the arc. Stephanie Barston chipped in 16 points while Ingrida Strikas had 15 points and a team high eight rebounds. The Aggies were 26-63 (.413) from the field and 22-26 (.846) from the charity stripe while out rebounding the Cowgirls 46-41.

It took both teams a couple of minutes to get on the scoring column to begin the second half until a shot by Marquelle Dent at the 17:32 mark. The traded scores over the next couple of minutes as the Aggies took a 54-46 lead into the first media timeout. The Cowgirls wouldn't give up as they went on a 10-4 run to pull within two, 58-56. A basket by Tijana Djukic ended a two minute scoreless drought for Utah State making it 60-56. Two three-point field goals by Mileto gave the Cowgirls their first lead of the second half, 62-60, with 10:52 left in the half. The Aggies leading scorer Jennifer Schlott fouled out of the game with 8:51 left in the contest with 31 points, while the Cowgirls continued to lead, 66-63.

A three-point play by Ingrida Strikas tied up the score at 66 all. Capped off by a Mileto three, Wyoming would go back up by three 71-68 with 4:56 on the clock. Utah State pulled to within one, 71-70, but free throws and a basket made it 75-70. Started by free throws from Makenlee Williams, the Aggies went on a 10-1 run to regain the lead, 80-76. The Cowgirls pulled to within two, 80-78, and had several chances down the stretch.
