Apr 13, 2012 - StaffKirk Billings of Lander was crowed Fremont County's table tennis champion March 24 after a half-day competition at Central Wyoming College in Riverton.
Billings and Kurt Schafli of Riverton emerged as the two top players in the double-elimination bracket. Schafli handed Billings his only loss, and Billings climbed back into the championship match through the losers bracket, where he was set to play Schafli again. but Schafli suffered a back injury in the interim and was unable to play the final, so Billings was the the winner by forfeit.
Schafli won the senior division, with Larry Brown second.
Women's champ was Barb Huggins of Lander. Susanne Schafli was the runner-up.
Billings paired with Patrick Troxel of Lander to win the doubles title with a perfect 3-0 record. Erin Burns and Tim Hampton finished second in that division.
Tentative plans call for next year's tournament to be played at Lander Valley High School.
