Eagle girls fall behind early, lose in Class 1-A state tourney opener

Mar 6, 2014 - By Randy Tucker, Sports Writer

CASPER -- Experience has its benefits, especially in culminating events. The quartet of Lingle Fort Laramie seniors Kaylee Greenwald, Shaylee Rickard, Alexandra Sutherland and Kylah Meyer combined for 63 of their team's 74 points in a 74-60 win over a young St. Stephen's team Thursday morning in opening-round Class 1-A girls state basketball tournament action at the Casper Events Center.

The Doggers built a 19-point lead by the half and held on for the 14-point win.

St. Stephen's faces the Hulett Red Devils in an elimination game at 9 a.m. Friday at Casper College. Hulett fell 66-35 to Burlington earlier in the opening game of the tournament.

The Doggers are a fundamental team. They pass well, and their half-court defense was stifling in the opening minutes.

St. Stephen's is inexperienced, and it showed in the opening minutes as the Doggers built an 11-4 advantage. The Eagles recovered and played better as the game went on.

Lingle held a 13-point lead after one period, but when the initial shock wore off the Eagles played a one-point game with the 1-A East champions for the remaining three periods.

Lingle worked the ball inside to the 6-foot Meyer, then played the inside/outside game well, with Rickard hitting a pair of treys to keep the Eagles from collapsing inside defensively.

St. Stephen's head coach Mike Redman used a pair of timeouts in the opening two periods to settle the girls.

The initial "deer in the headlights" look that hampered the Eagles in the opening minutes quickly dissolved in the second half behind the play of senior Marcel Lynch, junior Camille Whiteman and sophomore Rachelle Lynch.

Lynch and Whiteman paced the Eagles with 14, while Oldman poured in 10.

Greenwald tallied 21 including seven of 10 from the line to lead the Doggers. Rickard hit 17, Meyer 16.

Lingle faces Burlington at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Casper College in semifinal action.
