Evanston demolishes RHS boys at regional; Riverton season over

Mar 7, 2014 - By Craig Blumenshine, Staff Writer

CASPER -- The two-time defending state champion Evanston Red Devils made just three 3-point shots in their Class 4-A West regional tournament boys basketball game against Riverton Thursday at Kelly Walsh High School.

But they were the first three shots they took, and the quick start spelled an early doom for the Wolverines, who fell hard to the Red Devils 52-29.

The loss ends Riverton's season.

Evanston, the fourth seed, advances to play top seed Kelly Walsh in the tournament semifinal Friday at 8:30 p.m. Rock Springs beat Green River 62-32 in other first-round play and will challenge the No. 2 Casper Natrona Mustangs Friday evening.

The Wolverines, last year's state Class 4-A runner up, finish the season with an 11-13 overall record and were 4-6 in the Class 4-A West.

Evanston led Riverton 15-6 after one quarter, and 30-12 at halftime.

"It happens sometimes. Evanston shot well and took advantage of their size. Honestly, if you look at it, they are three or four inches bigger per kid. They played really well tonight and deserve a lot of credit.," Riverton head coach Dick Quayle said.

Brandon Fullerton, forced to exit the game twice with an injury, the first a gash above his left eye and the second in his knee, led Riverton with 10.

Alek Johnson led all scorers with 15 for Evanston, and 6-foot-7 Cole Revelli added 12. Brock Ehlers had 10.

"We didn't get shots to go early. We knew what was going to happen, and we just didn't get it done. You look back at it, and we are two baskets and a free throw away from being 7-3 in our conference and in second place. These guys came so close. I'm as proud of this group as any I've coached," Quayle said.
