Cody edges Lander boys in 3-A West regional title game

Mar 10, 2014 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Cody overcame a 12-point deficit in the third quarter to edge the Lander Tigers 46-42 Saturday night in the Class 3-A West regional boys basketball title game at Mountain View High School.

Cody hit pressure-packed free throws in the final few seconds to earn the No. 1 seed for the state tournament.

Lander qualified for state by beating Star Valley 54-50 Friday night in one of the semifinals.

"There was a lot of pressure in the Star Valley game," Lander coach Terry Hopkin said. "Star Valley is a very good basketball team, and we banged heads with them."

Lander dominated Pinedale in the first two quarters to take a 71-49 win in the first game of the regional tournament on Thursday.

The Tigers face Glenrock on Thursday afternoon to open state tournament play. Glenrock edged Douglas 51-50 in the 3-A East third-place game.

Wheatland beat Rawlins 62-56 in the Class 3-A East title game.

The slowdown tempo started early between the two Class 3-A schools, as Lander had a slim 17-16 lead at halftime.

"I was not surprised on how low scoring it was because both the teams are wanting to work their plays," Hopkin said. "They want every possession to count. We were waiting for the best opportunities to score."

Lander began the second half with three easy baskets in transition off the press break.

"The big thing is they came out and pressured us," Hopkin said. "That opened it up for us a little bit."

The Tigers were up by 10 points early in the second half.

"We got some inside work with a high-low game moving a little bit," Hopkin said.

At the end of the quarter, Star Valley dropped in two straight 3-pointers.

"Star Valley came storming back," Hopkin said. "They were right back in the game."

Star Valley started to put Lander at the free throw line early in the fourth quarter.

"We had to step up and make the ones that needed to make," Hopkin said.

Cooxooeii Black and Casey Winger both came up huge for Lander when the game was still in question.

Winger finished with 16 points, and Black had 15.

Hunter Bregar scored 10 with two 3-pointers. Jaxon Hedges contributed with eight.

At the end of the third quarter, Lander lost starter Jess Oldham to a knee injury.

"Jess was pretty upset, and our kids were pretty upset," Hopkin said. "With all that happening, I thought that we handled ourselves mentally when we needed to when we were trying to put this thing away."

"Defensively, I don't think that we came out as strong as I hoped that we would," Hopkin said. "I thought that the kids were thinking because we won on Monday that it was going to be an easy game."

In the first half, Pinedale stayed with the Tigers and only trailed by six points.

"Pinedale shot the ball really well in the first half," Hopkin said.

Lander came out high energy in the third quarter to quickly pull away from Pinedale. Winger dropped in 22 points.

"It was just a matter of getting our heads in the game," Hopkin said. "Pinedale cooled down a little bit in the second half."
