Heartbreaker for Eagle girls in consolation game at state

Mar 10, 2014 - By Randy Tucker, Sports Writer

CASPER -- The St. Stephen's Lady Eagles came within a free throw of the Class 1-A consolation title Saturday morning at Casper College in a 73-72 overtime loss to the Upton Bobcats.

The Eagles had a solid weekend after losing in the opening round to eventual state champion Lingle Ft. Laramie.

St. Stephen's sophomore Rachelle Lynch tallied a career-high 33 points to lead the Eagles. She was effective inside and out and played through the entire overtime period in spite of foul trouble in the third period.

Upton countered with junior guard Sophia Claycomb, who paced the Bobcats with 28.

The game was physical from the start, and officials called 46 combined fouls and sent players to the free throw line 63 times.

Free-throw shooting was the bane of the Eagles all morning, with St. Stephen's hitting just 14 of 29 attempts from the stripe. But it was better than team on the other end, with Upton hitting just 13 of 34.

St. Stephen's opened an early lead on a follow shot and 3-pointer from Lynch and additional baskets by Camille Whiteman and Marcel Oldman to lead 19-11 after one period.

The trio scored 62 of 72 points on the night for St. Stephen's.

The half ended with St. Stephen's holding a six-point lead but in foul trouble across the roster.

A Lynch layup 43 seconds into the third period gave St. Stephen's its largest lead of the game at 35-25, but Upton began to chip away.

Claycomb scored 10 points in the period on three baskets and four points from the line, with Lorena Rhoden hitting a pair of follow shots. Kierra Brown snagged an offensive rebound with 1:00 left in the third that knotted the game at 42. Upton continued to rally and led by one at the end of three.

The Bobcats built a seven-point lead with 5:13 to play on a coast-to-coast layup by Claycomb and held it until Lynch hit a pair of free throws and Whiteman converted a follow shot with 3:19 to go. Whiteman picked up her fifth foul just 19 seconds later, but St. Stephen's continued to close.

Uriah Addison hit a long 3-pointer, and Oldman scored on a length-of-the-floor drive to close the score to 61-60 with 1:43 left.

Lynch tied the game at 61 on a free throw, but Bailey Parrish scored quickly for Upton. Lynch drove for a basket with 34 seconds to go to end regulation with the score knotted at 63.

A pair of ties in the extra period at 67 and 69 ended with Oldman missing a cherry pick layup with :43 left.

The Eagles stepped on the line throwing in the ball and Brown hit a pair of free throws to give Upton a 73-69 lead.

Lynch hit the final shot of the season from 28 feet as the buzzer sounded, but the 3-pointer was one point too little.
