Glenrock cages Tigers in first-round upset at 3-A state tournament

CASPER -- A dream season turned into a nightmare for the Lander Tigers on Thursday night at the Casper Events Center in the opening round of the Class 3-A state boys basketball tournament.

The Glenrock Herders were on fire in the half and posted a 58-47 upset win against the Tigers.

Glenrock shot 58.3 percent from the field in the first two quarters to jump start the game.

Glenrock was making its first state tournament appearance since 1997.

Lander had aspirations of challenging for a state title this weekend in Casper. The Tigers were the No. 2 seed from the West.

Glenrock came in as the No. 3 seed from the East.

The loss sent the Tigers into a consolation game with Wheatland on Friday afternoon.

Powell downed Wheatland 69-62 in the final game of the first day.

Star Valley and Cody are in one of the semifinals, while Glenrock plays Powell.

The championship game is Saturday night at the Casper Events Center.

Glenrock 58, Lander 47

The story of the first two quarters was how Glenrock played offensively against the Tigers.

Glenrock had a fast-paced, 18-16 lead after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Glenrock built its biggest lead of the game at 27-18 on two free throws from Jordan Millay.

Millay is a 6-foot-7 center who caused problems for Lander's defense.

Three minutes later, Lander had the score down to 30-24 late in the second period.

Glenrock pushed the lead back up to 34-27 at the break after Millay made another bucket inside.

In the third quarter, Glenrock pushed the lead to 41-30 on two free throws from standout guard Tyler Olsen.

Lander's Jaxon Hedges scored on a field goal at 41-34 at the 1:41 mark of the period.

Olsen ended the quarter on a half-court buzzer-beater for Glenrock to make it 44-34 after three quarters.

In the final quarter, LVHS had it down to 48-40 on a pair of free throws from Cooxooeii Black with 3:18 left.

Desperation started to sneak in as Lander launched 3-pointer after 3-pointer, but didn't have any luck in the final minutes.

Four players scored for Lander in the setback. Black led the way with 20 points and nine rebounds.

Hedges scored 11 points. Hunter Bregar and Casey Winger had eight points apiece.

Bregar had two early 3-pointers in the first quarter.

Millay knocked in 21 points, and Olsen finished with 17 points.
