The top priority for the Riverton Wolverines girls soccer team this season is moving up the ladder in the Class 4-A West conference.
In 2013, the Wolverines finished fourth in the league. RHS lost to Laramie and Casper Natrona at the state soccer tournament.
Riverton's conference is made up Casper Kelly Walsh, Casper Natrona, Evanston, Green River and Rock Springs.
RHS coach Tayna Santee inherits an experienced group of players.
"We are certainly looking to make ourselves known within our conference," Santee said.
The Wolverines begin the season Friday night in Sheridan.
"Sheridan is going to be a better team this year than they were last year," Santee said. "They are always tough.
They are a good, solid soccer town. They have a lot of kids with a lot of experience."
Sheridan finished fourth at the Class 4-A state tournament last year.
"That will be a good first outing for us," Santee said. "I want all the players to focus on playing solid defense. Playing good defense always results in getting good opportunities offensively."
Returning starters for RHS include senior goalkeeper Maci Evans.
Seniors Ashlyn Cousin and Aisha Durfey and junior Camey Fegler are veteran defenders.
"They were all part of our defense last year. They will be part of our defense again this year," Santee said.
Juniors Savannah Salisbury and Morgan Doyle are expected to be midfielders.
"We are kind of mixing it up this year," Santee said.
Forwards are seniors Taylor Paskett-Krause and Rachel Graham
Senior Meghen Peil will be playing defense for the Wolverines.
Seniors Autumn Hutson and Brittney Baxter played a significant amount of time for last year for the Wolverines.
"We will even have sophomores get more playing time this year," Santee said.
Doyle, Graham and Krause are expected to be the top scorers for RHS.
"We are attempting to change our formation to give us some more opportunities," Santee said.
During the offseason, the Wolverines did summer workouts in June and July.
RHS attended a team camp in Billings, Mont.
The Wolverines had fall soccer in September.
RHS went to one tournament in the fall.
"Just getting our foot on the ball for the extra time was good," Santee said.
In December, January and February, the Wolverines did indoor workouts.
After the season opener, the Wolverines play Class 3-A Worland on Friday, March. 28.
RHS travels to Rock Springs on Saturday, March. 29.
The Wolverines face Casper Natrona in a Friday, April 4, match.
RHS opens the home season on Tuesday, April 8, with Kelly Walsh at Wolverine Field.
"We are at home a lot at the end of the season," Santee said.
The Wolverines host the Class 4-A West regional soccer team on May 15-17 at Wolverine Field.
