Two District 38 principals not being rehired

Mar 24, 2014 - By Alejandra Silva, Staff Writer

The contracts for the Arapahoe middle and charter high school principals did not get renewed during the Fremont County School District 38 special board meeting this month.

Superintendent Chantell Denson did not recommend renewing the contract of Arapahoe Middle School principal Victoria Sherman.

Denson said Sherman decided not to re-sign with the district, but the principal will complete her second year with the district.

Denson, who has announced her own resignation, recommended advertising for the position for the 2014-2015 school year.

Chair-woman Karen Brown and board members Charlene Gambler-Brown, June Shakespeare and John Goggles voted to advertise for the open spot.

Denson also made the recommendation to rehire Arapahoe Charter High School principal Janet Jorgensen for the 2014-15 school year, but no motion was made by the board.

Brown asked for a motion to advertise for the ACHS principal position, and the remaining board members voted in approval.

Jorgensen had joined the district for the 2013-14 school year after the resignation of Melvin "Mel" Miller, who had held the position for five years before Jorgensen.

The contract for elementary school principal Mike Lambert was approved for the 2014-15 school year.

The contract of district business manager Connie Gay also was ap-proved by the board.

During the March 12 regular school board meeting, supervisor contracts were approved for Matt Ayers, technology director, Dave Hanway, food service department, and Ken Crowson, curriculum director. No action was taken on supervisor contracts for facilities director Bridger Hanway and transportation director Russell Norris.

The contract for special education director Marilyn Flammang was not approved by a majority, because only three board members attended the meeting and only two voted in favor. The item will be placed on the next board meeting's agenda.

The supervisor contract for federal programs director Pat Moss also was tabled until the next meeting. The contract for the ACHS track position was approved for Keith Bauder, and the AES and AMS job descriptions also were approved.

The Student of the Month award was given to Terrell Jenkins, Leo Hanway II received the Employee of the Month award, and the community partner recognition was given to Patti Weber. The board also approved summer school and an extended school year for special education students. The summer classes will run 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday from June 2 to June 20. The board OK'd advertising for certified and classified staff to teach the classes during those three weeks.

The next regular school board meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. April 14.
