Virginia A. Patterson died Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at Westward Heights Care Center in Lander. She was 89 years old.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 25, at First Church of the Nazarene in Lander with Pastor Phillip Ferguson officiating. A visitation will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 25, at the First Church of the Nazarene.

Virginia A. Smith was born Sept. 6, 1924, in Aurora, Ill., the daughter of William John and Clara (Lipke) Smith. She attended St. Paul's Lutheran School in Aurora.

On Dec. 16, 1944, she married Robert E. Patterson in Aurora.

She was a checker at Walt's Super Market in Aurora. When she retired, she took a job as a school crossing guard.

She lived in Illinois until her husband died Dec. 21, 1983. In June 1984 she moved to Lander to be near her daughter Karla. In Lander she worked as a foster grandmother at the Wyoming State Training School and at Child Development Services.

Her family said she was faithful in doing the card ministry for her church until she entered the nursing home.

They also said she was a great cook and loved entertaining friends and family. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and could not do enough for them.

She is survived by her children, Sharon (Bob) Lower of Michigan, Larry Patterson of Nevada and Karla (Tom) Cooper of Lander; sister Marilyn (Jim) Riva of Montogmery, Ill.; grandchildren Vicki (Tom) Kennah of Lander, Mark Cooper of Douglas, Jeff (Cheri) Patterson of Illinois, Jason (Carrie) Patterson of Illinois, Lisa Patterson of Colorado, Stacey (Jon) Eschberger of Michigan, and Kristen (Joe) Shurmer of Michigan; 12 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; friends Marcene White, Freida Brinda and Sharon Hackert; and her many friends at Lynn Gardens.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; parents William and Clara Smith; in-laws Kathryn and Carl Patterson; brother-in-law Lloyd Patterson; sisters Dorothy (George) Holland, Hazel (Art) Smith, Ruth (Louie) Cyko and Marion (Walter) Krueger; brother Royal (Mary) Smith; and daughters-in-law Janet Patterson and Yvonne Patterson.
