Cougar boys blow out Wranglers, 79-46

Jan 29, 2012 - By Randy Tucker, Sports Writer

PAVILLION - No matter how you defend it, 3-pointers light the scoreboard up like nothing else. Wind River opened Friday's game at Shoshoni with four straight 3-point plays in building a quick 12-0 lead. Three of those came on long range shots from Jesse Brown and the other came in the old fashioned way with Tyson Lonebear hitting a jump shot and following with a free throw.

The Cougars blew out the Wranglers 79-46 to remain unbeaten in the Southwest 2-A.

Shoshoni made it competitive with an 8-0 run of its own to end the first period. Josh Thoren hit a baseline, reverse layup and Nick Wright hit three straight on post moves to close the gap to four.

Brown opened the second just as he did the first with another 3-pointer. Lone Bear added three treys in the period, and the Cougars nearly doubled the score.

Wind River continued to run away from the Wranglers in the third. Shoshoni scored in the paint on a couple of Thoren putbacks along with drives from Jordan Whitener and Grayson Medicine Cloud, but nothing came easy against the Wind River defense.

The Cougars jumped into a full court 1-2-2 press to open the final period just as Shoshoni coach Max Mills put his junior varsity on the floor. The combination of younger players on the floor against Wind River's devastating press was just that for Shoshoni, devastating.

Lone Bear, Brown, Ryan Weliever and Roger Wagon fueled a blistering 10-1 run before the Shoshoni varsity returned to the floor.

Weliever had the chance for a break-away slam in traffic but hit the front of the rim on the attempt and shot free throws instead.

The familiar Fort Washakie trio of Lone Bear, Brown and Wagon paced the Cougars with 24, 21 and 14 points, respectively. Nick Wright led Shoshoni with 11.

Shoshoni travels to Burlington on Tuesday then hosts Kemmerer and Big Piney next weekend in Southwest 2-A action.

Wind River entertains non-conference 1-A Dubois on Friday at home.
