Wolverine track teams tack on Cody trip after Natrona invita

Apr 1, 2014 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

The Riverton 800-meter relay took first

Riverton High School Wolverines track and field athletes competed in back-to-back meets over the weekend.

RHS begin the season Friday in a meet at Casper, then ended the weekend Saturday at the Yellowstone Sports Medicine Invitational in Cody.

The second meet was held in warm but windy conditions.

"I was pleased with the results we got from our kids on back-to-back days," RHS co-head coach Jorah Griffith said. "It allowed us to spread out our multiple-event athletes over two days rather than having to decide which events to compete them in."

The Wolverines have a number of athletes doing five to seven events.

"They are limited at meets by the four-even limit," Griffith said. "I think this really helped them to concentrate on their events each day. I saw several athletes come back on the second day with personal record marks."

The track meet in Cody featured mostly teams from Class 3-A.

The annual Roy Peck Invitational is Saturday at Wolverine Track.

"As we get ready for the Roy Peck, we will concentrate on technique, but because it's still early in the season, we will be training through this meet to some degree," Griffith said.

Good relay time

Top performances for the Wolverines on Saturday included the 4x800-meter relay team of Thomas Beasley, Ben Zoller, Brayden Draper and Brytan Sponhunter winning the race in 9:16.27.

"It was one of the best times that they have run," RHS co-head coach Tawn Gopp said. "They ran strong."

Ashtyn Leisy was in the runner-up position in the 400 meters in 1:03.09.

Lovell star athlete Kim Shumway won the title in 57.68.

In the boys 3,200 meters, Zoller placed third in 11:11.03.

Shepp Campbell added a third for RHS in the high jump at 5-10.

Riley Reichert was second in the discus at 150-2. Powell's Garrett Lynch won the event in a mark of 161-6.

Joe Lupher from Riverton came home with a third-place throw of 45-1.50 in the shotput. He was sixth in the discus.
