Apr 3, 2014 - Dean Clark, RivertonEditor:
Oil, oil, oil. You have heard of it. It makes your car go (well, most of them).
But it is much more than that, something our elected officials fail to talk about. My guess is that when our elected officials took the oath of office, they were ordained with superior knowledge. They chose to leave out all the great things made from oil.
More than 6,000 items are made with the help of oil. A barrel of oil is 42 gallons. It makes 19.4 gallons of gasoline, and the rest is used to make things such as plastic.
We could live longer without gas than we could without plastic. Think about it. No cell phones, computers, no ballpoint pens, no MRI machines, no X-ray machines.
All meat comes wrapped in plastic, your drugs come in plastic bottles. Goodbye, bottled water. Goodbye, toys. No more axle grease, no motor oil. Check it out. The list is endless.
I know, said one elected official. Let's take the most popular food in the world and make gasoline out of it. We'll get a statue in Iowa. Corn farmers will love us.
But when you check it out, I think you will agree we have to get government out of the way and start letting oil companies produce oil we know we have.
Put men and women back to work. Let those workers become taxpayers getting us back to being the richest country in the world.
We have to pay off our debt or China could foreclose and become the owner of our national parks. Yellowstone will go first.
