Wolverine girls lose lead, fall 2-1 to Kelly Walsh TrojansApr 9, 2014 By Craig Blumenshine, Staff Writer
Despite jumping out to a 1-0 halftime lead, the Riverton Lady Wolverines soccer team gave up two second-half goals and fell to Casper Kelly Walsh 2-1 Tuesday evening at Wolverine Field.
The loss drops Riverton's record to 1-4 over all and 1-2 in Class 4-A West play.
Riverton, which created solid pressure throughout the match, scored its goal just before halftime in the 39th minute when Rachel Graham played a perfect, left-footed through ball to Taylor Paskett-Krause, who beat the Lady Trojan defense and finished.
"We had other opportunities in the first half but couldn't finish, and that was frustrating," Riverton head coach Tanya Santee said.
Kelly Walsh responded after halftime in the 43rd minute when freshman Abby Chambers scored.
Riverton almost grabbed the lead back in the 55th minute when defender Camey Fegler solidly broke through the Lady Trojan's midfield and played a nice pass to Jordan Shells, whose shot on goal missed inches to the keeper's left.
Playing in transition, Kelly Walsh scored on its next possession in the 56th minute when Amelie Wilhite raced past the Riverton defense and shot the game winner.
When asked if she thought this was a game Riverton should have won, Santee said "I hope our girls feel that way."
Riverton will travel to Green River, currently the fifth-ranked team in the most-recent wyopreps.com media poll, for a league match Thursday at 3 p.m., and will travel to Worland Friday and Saturday for 13-team tournament.
"This weekend will be good for getting us prepared for when we go to regionals and state," Santee said.
Riverton will play Star Valley and Powell in games Friday and will be then be placed in bracket play Saturday.
