Apr 11, 2014 - By Craig Blumenshine, Staff WriterThe Riverton Wolverines boys soccer team suffered their first conference loss of the season Thursday evening in a 1-0 setback at Green River.
Playing in windy conditions, Green River's Chase Erickson took advantage of a Wolverine defensive breakdown and scored the game-winning goal in the 55th minute to keep Green River undefeated in the Class 4-A West.
"We played hard the first half going against the wind. The second half, we came out a little flat energy wise, and our shape was always flat. We didn't play very well and didn't do the things we talked about at halftime. Green River deserved to win today," RHS head coach Erly Cornejo said.
The Wolverines had a chance to tie the match, but couldn't finish after Tristan White and Scott Sowards created a great opportunity to get the equalizer, according to Cornejo.
"We didn't particularly play well but played against a really good team and only lost 1-0," Cornejo said.
Riverton (4-2, 3-1 Class 4-A West) will stay in Green River for a tournament today and Saturday. The Wolverines will challenge Star Valley and Pinedale in pool play Friday, then move to bracket play Saturday, where they will have a good opportunity to see Green River again.
Also participating in the tournament are Class 4-A teams Evanston and Cheyenne South along with Class 3-A teams Cody, Jackson, Douglas, Worland and Lander.
