Apr 14, 2014 - From staff reportsAn annual springtime event in the middle of the 20th century was the Fremont County All Sports Banquet. The 1958 version took place in April at the county fair building in Riverton.
The keynote speaker had a familiar name -- Bill Strannigan -- but not the St. Stephen's High School (and later Riverton High School) coach of the same name. This Bill Strannigan was the head basketball coach at Iowa State University who later would be hired as head coach at the University of Wyoming. (The two Bill Strannigans were related.) The Iowa State coach had been roommates with legendary UW star Kenny Sailors when both played for the Cowboys in the 1940s.
Highlighting the banquet was a film of Iowa State's game against the Kansas Jayhawks and star center Wilt Chamberlain. The Cyclones upset Kansas 48-42. Strannigan narrated the game film, highlighting how his team held down Chamberlain, who averaged 31 points a game that year.
