Watts sets new sprint records for Wolverines

Apr 14, 2014 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Sean Watts shattered the Riverton High School records in both the 100 meters and 200 meters Friday at the Trojan Invitational in Casper.

Watts set the new record in the 100 with a time of 10.93. The previous record was 11.01, set by Ben Gose in 1987.

In the 200 meters, Watts ran to a record time of 22:31. Leroy Lange set the old mark in 1982.

"The 100 meters was a fun race for me," said Watts, an RHS senior. "I had great tail wind behind me.

I had some really good competition and a great warmup. I knew that it would be a great time for me because of the overall atmosphere. I had some of the best competition in the state with me."

Gose is now an assistant track coach for the Lander Tigers. He spent Saturday at the Wyoming Indian Invitational in Ethete.

"When I saw the time that he ran at the very beginning of the year, I knew that it was just a matter of time," Gose said. "I'm not surprised.

I'm very happy for him. I was surprised that the record had stood for so long. It's great to see Riverton track with a guy of that caliber."

Top performances

After Watts, Ashtyn Leisy and Nancy Webb won individual titles for the RHS girls.

Leisy, a senior, had the best mark in the long jump with a distance of 17-1.25. RHS teammate Kaylee Lewis was close behind in second place at 30-2.25.

Webb, a freshman, finished first in the triple jump in 30-2.25.

In the boys side, Ben Zoller ran a 4:54.69 to place second in the 1,600 meters. Natrona's Austin Williamson won it in 4:52.47.

Shepp Campbell placed second in the triple jump (42-4) and third in the high jump (6-1).

Watts wins

In Friday's 100-meter race, Watts edged out a pair of Casper Natrona runners for the title.

Robert Counts was second in 11.06 and Tristin Cloward placed third (11.09).

"I had no idea that I would be setting a school record in that one," Watts said. "It was always windy from one direction. It was blowing right down the back stretch."

Watts broke the school mark in the 200 meters while finishing third. Chase Andersen won the race in 22:08.

"I was nervous about the 200 meters," Watts said. "I had run the 4x100-meter relay earlier. I had almost passed off competing. I started to get a really bad headache. To place third at in the race is way better than I thought that I would do."

Watts is now in his third season running for the Wolverines.

"The biggest thing is just the experience," Watts said. "This year, I'm understanding the form and what is good and bad."
