Apr 14, 2014 - By Craig Blumenshine, Staff WriterThe Riverton Wolverines boys soccer team won its first three matches at a tournament in Green River before falling to tournament champion Jackson 3-1 in the title match Saturday afternoon.
The Wolverines avenged Thursday's loss to Green River by beating the Wolves 2-1 in shootout (4-3) early Saturday to advance to the gold bracket final against Class 3-A Jackson.
"Jackson is the best team in the state, in any class. They are so good and so technical. They were fun to watch. They play a different brand of soccer and attack with a purpose," RHS head coach Erly Cornejo said, adding the he felt his team played its best soccer of the season in the first 20 minutes against Jackson.
"It was nice to see that we can play at that level," Cornejo said.
On Friday, Riverton beat Pinedale 3-1 and Star Valley 2-1 in pool play.
Overall, Cornejo was pleased with his team's play over the long weekend that began Thursday.
"We played better (Saturday) against Green River than we did on Thursday, but, overall, we didn't possess the ball near like we should have, or could have. That was the story of the weekend," Cornejo said.
Riverton will make a long trip to Gillette for a single match Thursday afternoon.
"Gillette will be a really important game for our team because we will see them down the road. Our focus this week will be getting our wide guys involved in the attack," Cornejo said.
