Apr 18, 2014 - By Randy Tucker, Sports WriterPAVILLION -- Sunny skies, warm temperatures and a noticeable lack of wind smiled on the 10 teams in competition Thursday at the 55th annual Wind River Invitational Track Meet at Pavillion.
The meet has been run every year since 1959, gradually evolving from the Morton Invitational. It has been held at three sites within the current Wind River district and was also held in Riverton in previous years.
The Big Piney girls easily outdistanced all the other squads, but the boys division was a fight until the final events of the day, with Shoshoni taking the meet. The Wranglers edged second place Big Piney 98-91, with Thermopolis a close third at 88.
Wyoming Indian freshman Charlene Brown won the 1,600-meter run and teammate Morning Gambler took the 3,200-meter run for Fremont County's only wins on the track.
Shoshoni's Raine Pingetzer edged Big Piney's Hannah Peterson by a quarter of an inch to take the triple jump with a career best leap of 33-3.
The Wrangler jumpers are experiencing great success this season under the guidance of assistant coach Nicole Biltoft. Biltoft competed at Jamestown College in North Dakota in the high jump, and all the jumpers at Shoshoni are showing steady improvement each week.
The Shoshoni 4x100-meter relay and the Wyoming Indian 4x800 each took first.
Pingetzer was second in the high jump and third in the long jump, with teammates Katelyn Jennings and Tammy Maddock also placing in the horizontal jumps.
Western Heritage Lutheran Academy's Dani Havercamp took second in the 100-meter dash and added a fourth in the 200.
The very competitive boy's division was paced by Dubois senior Sterling Baker with a sweep of both hurdle events and a winning toss of 138 feet in the discus.
Jace Marx of Big Piney holds the fastest time in Class 2-A in both the 100- and 200-meter runs and entered the meet with the fastest 400-meter time as well.
In a strong effort, Shoshoni sophomore Triston Parrish beat Marx in the 400, running in a difficult position out of lane seven. Parrish pulled away from Marx over the final 80-meters to post an impressive time of 51.9 and take the lead among 2-A 400-meter runners across the state.
As with the girls, the Shoshoni boys are improving in the jumps as well. Parrish won the high jump at 5-10, and Mason Steffen took top honors in the long jump with a leap of 19-5.5. Shoshoni freshman Anthony Cousineau also placed high in both the long and triple jumps.
Wyoming Indian junior Keegan Her Many Horses met the qualifying standard in the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:52 to win the event.
Due to a limited number of runners the 3,200-meter run was combined, with boys and girls running the event together. Wyoming Indian's Cori Lamebear was unprecedented in the event, lapping every other competitor twice during the race to easily win by over half a mile.
Shoshoni's 4x400-meter relay took firsts, followed closely by the Wyoming Indian quartet.
While first place finishes were limited for Fremont County boys there were many breakthroughs.
Wind River senior Dylan Lookingbill was solid in the hurdles with a second place finish behind Baker in both events. He added points in the 200-meters as well.
Shoshoni junior Josh Oaks had a stellar day as well, placing in two open sprints and one relay event. Oaks challenged Marx in the 100 to finish second and added a fourth in the 400-meter dash.
It's a two-meet week for most county schools with many athletes converging on Riverton for a Tuesday afternoon twilight meet before traveling to Dubois on Saturday.
