DUBOIS -- It was a homecoming weekend of sorts on a weekend with competition limited by proms, pow wows and basketball tournaments. Thermopolis head track coach Ernie Mecca took an abbreviated squad back to Dubois, a school where he served as teacher, coach and administrator for much of his career. Dubois head coach David Trembly had a homecoming of his own with nephew Forrest Cross of Sundance competing in the shot put and discus. "My sister and I have been trying to get him over here to compete, and the weather finally cooperated," Trembly said. The meet was an abbreviated affair, with no relays being run and just a handful of athletes competing from the six schools in attendance. Dubois has a six-lane track and most events had just one or two heats. Jackson brought a team of freshman and sophomores to compete against the 1-A and 2-A varsity teams in the meet. Western Heritage Lutheran Academy had a big day with junior Dani Havercamp and sophomore Anastasia Strong combining for seven top-three finishes for the small Lutheran school in Riverton, including wins by Havercamp in the 200-meter dash and long jump and a first place from Strong in the high jump. The boys and girls ran together in the 1600- and 3200-meter runs, which compressed the meet to a shorter time that narrowly beat an approaching rain storm from the east at about 2 p.m. Dubois senior Sterling Baker had a solid showing at his final home meet, easily winning the 110-meter high hurdles, the 300-meter intermediate hurdles and the discus. Thermopolis had prom scheduled for Saturday evening, and much of Wyoming Indian's squad was either playing basketball in a tournament in Fort Hall, Idaho or at a large powwow in Albuquerque. Most of the county's small schools travel to Meeteetse next Friday for another meet on a six-lane track. Girls 100-meter Dash: 1. Makayla George, THM 13.78, 2. Dani Havercamp, WHLA 13.96, 3.
