Tribal election code is crucial and must not be undermined

May 1, 2014 - Dallas Coando, Fort Washakie

Editor:

I would just like to say thank you to all who voted for me. Unfortunately, I have declined due to health reasons. But, I'd also like to express my concerns regarding the very policy and process of the very important documents that we, the Eastern Shoshone people, put in place in general council.

These procedures are used to protect our government and our people. One of which is the election code. Though it's not a perfect document, it's there to be used as a safeguard for the Shoshone people and Shoshone government.

What happened recently with our tribal government is not a normal action and was led by people filled with hate and prejudice for others and should not be tolerated.

Elections are a very important part of our government. The turnout in the April 15 special election was exceptional and says much to the integrity of the Shoshone people. This is the voice of our people.

So with that I'd just like to wish the next three election judges congratulations and good luck for the next two years.
