May 2, 2014 - From staff reportsRiverton resident Joan Armstrong received the DAR Community Service Award at the March meeting of the Fremont Chapter NSDAR.
The award is presented to individuals who have contributed to their communities in an outstanding manner through voluntary achievements in cultural, educational, patriotic and historical endeavors.
Armstrong has served the local chapter as Flag of the USA chairwoman for eight years.
When she saw a need for a retired flag repository in the community, she obtained a used mailbox, painted it and placed it at the VFW on West Main Street.
The box has been filled many times over the years, and Armstrong has picked up the flags and disposed of them in the prescribed manner, which has taken time and dedication. The need was greater than she originally had anticipated, because schools and businesses also used the repository for flag disposal. The box is located temporarily at the new veteran's hall on East Main Street, but Armstrong is looking for a permanent location for it.
Armstrong is a life member of the VFW and has served the Order of Eastern Star for more than 50 years. She also has participated in her church, teaching Sunday school and serving on the council.
