"La Cenerentola," or Cinderella, is an old folk story included in Grimm's Fairy Tales. Rossini uses the famous tale as the subject of his second famous comic opera composed a few years following the great success of his first, "The Barber of Seville."
The Cinderella story has been told and retold over the centuries, more recently in cinema, stage and television in forms as varied as Walt Disney's animated characters to Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical production on Broadway.
For the opera, Rossini's treatment is both humorous and musically inspired.Joyce DiDinato and Juan Diego Florez headline a magnificent cast, with the audience given a strong rooting interest against Don Magnifico, the cruel stepfather.
Fabio Luisi directs the new production.
