Fremont County track athletes make marks at elite showcase in Casper
May 5, 2014 - By Randy Tucker, Sports Writer
A handful of Fremont County athletes competed at the Wyoming Track Classic in Casper Friday Evening at Harry Geldien Stadium.
Riverton senior Ashtyn Leisy and junior Jensen Pettit represented the girls in the modern versions of the Wyoming Meet of Champions. Leisy placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 17-5.5, while Pettit was fifth in the 300-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 47.60.
Casper Kelly Walsh sprinter Jerayah Davis swept the sprints in impressive fashion, as crosstown rival Lauren Taubert of Natrona did in the hurdles.
Possibly the best performance came from Sundance senior Kacie O'Connor in the girls discus. The small 2-A program has produced stellar discus throwers over the past few years, and O'Connor's throw of 145-11 easily outdistanced the competition.
Riverton placed three boys in the premier event, Sean Watts, Riley Reichert and Shepp Campbell. Tristan Herr and Jaxon Hedges represented Lander Valley High School.
The busiest athlete at the meet was Dubois senior Sterling Baker. Baker won the 110 hurdles and the discus earlier in the day 175 miles away in Meeteetse, then quickly traveled across the state to take fourth in the 300-meter hurdles in Casper.
Watts was third in the 100 meters and fourth in 200 behind a stellar performance from Rock Springs sprinter Carlos Salcido. Salcido swept the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes.
Lander's Tristan Herr ran a blistering 49.75 in the 400 but finished just behind Salcido in the event.
Riverton's Riley Reichert had a solid throw in the boys discus, finishing sixth with a toss of 145-6.
Campbell didn't place in the top eight but his 5-10 high jump was 10th, and his triple jump of 40-9.25 was ninth in a packed field that saw first to 10th separated by just two feet.
