Know the rules if you are supporting a candidate

May 21, 2014 - Julie Freese, Fremont County Clerk, Lander

Editor:

Election season is upon us, with candidate filing under way. I just wanted to remind everyone that there are some rules regarding the support or opposition of a candidate.

A political action committee means any group of two or more persons organized and associated for the purpose of raising, collecting or spending money for use in the aid of, or otherwise influencing, or attempting to influence, directly or indirectly, the election or defeat of candidates for public office, candidate's committees, or political parties, for support of, or opposition to, any initiative or referendum petition drive for the adoption or defeat of any ballot proposition.

A group cannot produce or send literature out to voters attempting to influence their potential vote for or against a candidate without filing as a PAC as defined above.

Recently a committee sent letters to various people in the community and are not filed as a PAC with the Fremont County Clerk within 10 days of forming.

If there are any questions, please contact my office at clerk@fremontcountywy.gov.
