Eight gold medals for county at state track

May 26, 2014 - By Randy Tucker, Staff Writer

CASPER -- Athletes from Fremont County stood at the top of the podium eight times over the three days of the all-class Wyoming state track and field championships at Casper Kelly Walsh High School.

In Class 2-A, Wind River's Danielle Giles won the high jump in dramatic fashion with a leap of 5-0.

Shoshoni's Raine Pingetzer saved her best for last in scoring the best triple jump of her career with a leap of 35-0, winning by 14 inches over second place.

On the boys side, Dubois senior Sterling Baker capped a stellar high school athletic career with a top finish in the 110-meter high hurdles and another in the discus. He added a second in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles.

The Class 2-A boys division was well represented, with three athletes from three different schools winning events. Wind River's Dylan Lookingbill won the 110-meter high hurdles and added a contested third place in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles.

The Class 2-A 300-meter race was decided with less than a hundredth of a second separating first from third place. Kaden Haun of Thermopolis was clocked at 40.29, as was Paden Wilson of Burns. Lookingbill came across in 40.93.

Shoshoni sophomore Triston Parrish won the 400-meter dash and placed in the high jump.

Keegan Her Many Horses of Wyoming Indian High School won the 800, was second in the 1600, and ran to third place in the 4x800-meter relay with teammates Natuin Trosper, Cory Lamebear and Buell Robinson.

Lander Valley High School won a title on the fleet feet of senior Tristan Herr, who posted a career-best time of 49.27 to win the 400-meter dash.

In Class 1-A girls action, Fremont County's points came from the two qualifiers from West-ern Heritage Lutheran Academy in Riverton. Dani Haverkamp was edged in the 300-meter finals to finish second, then came in fourth in the long jump and a pair of eighth-place finishes in the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

Anastasia Strong was fourth for Western Heritage in the high jump, fifth in the 200, sixth in the 100 and eighth in the long jump.

Wyoming Indian freshman Charlene Brown had a great effort in her first state meet but ran against the phenomenal Kim Shumway of Lovell for most of the meet. Brown was second in the 1600, fourth in the 3200 and fifth in the 1600. The Chiefs' 4x800-meter relay of Brown, Darcia Pingree, Morning Gambler and Kiana Wallowingbull placed fourth.

Lander's only points came from Drew DeKing with a seventh-place finish in the 200-meter dash.

All of the Riverton girls' individual points came from one athlete as well, with senior Ashtyn Leisy taking fifth in the 100, sixth in the 200 and seventh in the long jump.

The Wolverine 4x100-meter relay of Leisy, Nancy Webb, Jordan Settlemire, and Kyli Yorgason was seventh.

The Dubois boys were well represented across the sprints, hurdles and field events. Rowan Hawk was second in the 110s, third in the 300s and sixth in the 200. Kurt Leseberg cleared 12-6 to take second in the pole vault and placed eighth in the 110-meter high hurdles. Freshman Brock Baker was eighth in the 300-meter hurdles.

Senior Austin Tharp posted his best throw of the season in shot put, placing third with a throw of 44-6.75.

In Class 2-A, Shoshoni junior Josh Oaks set the stage for next season with third in the 100 and sixth in the 200-meter dash.

Oaks joined Parrish, Anthony Cousineau and Mason Steffen in an outstanding effort in the 4x400-meter relay. The Wrangler quartet was edged by by Saratoga to finish as runner up in the metric mile relay.

After Herr's winning performance in the 400, Jaxon Hedges carried the mail in three other individual events. Hedges was second in the 100, third in the long jump and fifth in the 200. The Tigers narrowly missed the state championship in their final event of the season, losing by .38 to Douglas in the 4x400-meter relay. Hedges, Herr, Marvin Aragon and Micah Whiting posted 3:26.68 in the event.

Riverton's effort in Class 4-A was paced by junior Shepp Campbell, who tallied three medals in the jumps. Campbell was second in the triple jump, fifth in the high jump and sixth in the long jump.

Wolverine senior Sean Watts was third in an incredibly fast 100-meter final that saw five runners come across in under 11 seconds. He added sixth in the 200-meter dash.

Riverton's discus team of Riley Reichert, Bo Patterson and Joe Lupher all competed well in the event, with all three making the top nine to advance to finals. Reichert finished fifth, Patterson eighth and Lupher just out of the money with a ninth-place throw of 146-1.

Only the Dubois boys brought home team hardware among all Fremont County schools. Coach David Trembly's Rams are competitive every season in spite of having one of the lowest enrollments in Wyoming. The Rams finished third behind Cokeville and Lingle /Fort Laramie with 69 points.

Thermopolis proved that quality beats quantity in a large meet, with head coach Ernie Mecca's Bobcats edging favored Lovell 89-83.

It was a storybook finish in Class 4-A boys, with Casper Natrona and heated rival Casper Kelly Walsh tied at 140.5 with just the 4x400-meter relay remaining. Both schools broke the all-class record in the event, with Natrona edging Kelly Walsh 3:20.07 to 3:20.68. Natrona's 10 points topped the eight Kelly Walsh gained for second, and the Mustangs won the state championship.
