Waheed tabbed to replace Cornejo as RHS boys soccer coach

Jun 10, 2014 By Craig Blumenshine, Staff Writer

Aziz Waheed, a Riverton Middle School science teacher, has been picked to replace Erly Cornejo as the Riverton Wolverines boys head soccer coach, school administrators confirmed Tuesday morning.

The Riverton School District 25 Board of Trustees will act on the coaching recommendation at its meeting Tuesday evening.

Waheed, a six-year assistant coach for the Wolverines under Cornejo, said Tuesday that he is excited and thankful for the opportunity.

"We have a great group of incoming seniors as well as many contributing underclassmen. We know a key to next year's success will be securing a goal keeper, playing better team defense, and keeping Tristan (White) mobile. He is going to have a big target on his back but I know with his skill set that will not be an issue," Waheed said.

Waheed is the fifth head coach in the 29-year history of the RHS boys soccer program and replaces Cornejo who resigned after seven seasons to pursue a coaching opportunity at Warner Pacific College.

The Wolverines captured the Class 4-A West regular season conference title this past season and will return a majority of its starters next year.
