Jun 10, 2014 - By Craig Blumenshine, Staff WriterHe was a six-year assistant coach under Erly Cornejo, who resigned recently to take a college job.
Aziz Waheed, a Riverton Middle School science teacher, has been picked to replace Erly Cornejo as the Riverton High School boys soccer coach, school administrators confirmed Tuesday morning.
The School District 25 Board of Trustees planned to act on the coaching recommendation at its meeting Tuesday evening.
Waheed, a six-year assistant coach for the Wolverines under Cornejo, said Tuesday morning that he is excited and thankful for the opportunity.
"We have a great group of incoming seniors as well as many contributing underclassmen. We know a key to next year's success will be securing a goal keeper, playing better team defense, and keeping Tristan (White) mobile. He is going to have a big target on his back, but I know with his skill set that will not be an issue," Waheed said.
Waheed becomes the fifth head coach in the 29-year history of the RHS boys soccer program and replaces Cornejo who resigned after seven seasons to pursue a coaching opportunity at Warner Pacific College.
The Wolverines captured the Class 4-A West regular season conference title this year and will return a majority of their starters next year.
