Apr 24, 2012 - By Craig Blumenshine, Staff WriterThe Riverton Wolverines soccer team tried to crawl back into Friday's West 4-A road match against conference leader Rock Springs when two freshman, Caleb Richmond and Tristan White, strung together a pass and a shot to pull Riverton within one with five minutes still to play.
But with a late penalty kick, the Tigers' second PK of the match, Rock Springs maintained the top of the West status with a 3-1 win over Riverton (1-6-2, 1-3-2 Class 4-A West).
The Wolverines will look to recover at Casper Natrona this Friday.
Game time at Cheney Alumni Field is 6 p.m.
Penalties cost Riverton
"We had two penalties. We gave up the first halfway through the first half. We got a goal back and gave away another PK. We broke down, and they got past a couple of our defenders for the first one," Riverton head coach Erly Cornejo said.
A miscommunication allowed Rock Springs to execute a deep header off a corner kick for its second goal, according to Cornejo.
"We played well, but they were the better team Friday," Cornejo said.
Wolverine midfielder Kade Salisbury was battling a nagging leg injury and could only play about 10 minutes in Friday's match, according to Cornejo.
"Kade was hurt. You can really tell how influential he is to the midfield. When he was out, we basically played around the midfield. He is really our best midfielder. He does everything," Cornejo said.
The Wolverines will learn to play through the midfield in practice this week and work to build confidence.
"As soon as we realized that Kade couldn't go, and especially after they scored their second goal, we got too desperate and played the wrong way and played too direct," Cornejo said.
Home for one Saturday
After Friday's match at NC, the Wolverines will return home for it's senior day match against Casper Kelly Walsh. The varsity will play at 10:30 a.m. at Wolverine Field.
