RMS Spartans take team title at Pinedale track invitational

Apr 26, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Riverton Middle School edged Rock Springs by seven points to win the seventh-grade boys team track and field title on Saturday at the Pinedale Invitational.

The Spartans scored 109 points for the No. 1 position. Rock Springs finished second (102 points) and Lander came in third (86).

The meet had 10 teams in the field.

"It was a combination of things," said RMS coach Travis McIntosh of his team winning the team title.

"We didn't have a lot of firsts, but we had a lot of kids place in events, which helped us score our team points."

The race for the team title came down to the final few events in Pinedale.

"They were really excited to win it," McIntosh said.

"It was very close down the stretch."

RMS seventh-grader Kylan Shultz won the high jump title (4-10). Riverton's 4x200-meter relay of Shultz, Alec Richardson, Gavin Settlemire and Coy Bennett crossed the finish line first (2:00.94).

Hunter Lee added a first in the discus (96-4) and a second in the shot put (34-10).

Four medals

RMS seventh-grader Nancy Webb was a four-event girls winner in Pinedale.

"Nancy has a lot of potential," McIntosh said. "She just needs to keep working hard and improve every day."

Webb took the 100 meters (13.94), 200 meters (29.73), long jump (13-1.5) and the triple jump (29-7.50).

"She is a pretty well-rounded athlete," McIntosh said. "She does like them all, but she prefers the jumping events a little more."

Webb's points helped RMS tie with Big Piney and Kemmerer for fourth (61 points).

Rock Springs won he meet (122 points).

Small team

RMS took five eighth-graders to the meet in Pinedale and placed third (85 points) in the team standings. Rock Springs finished first (97.5) and Pinedale came in second (94.5).

"That was just amazing with what those girls were able to accomplish," McIntosh said.

Eighth-grader Jordan Shells won the 200 meters (28.98) and the 100-meter hurdles (17.92).
