Apr 27, 2012 - UW Sports InformationTwo members of the Wyoming Cowgirl Tennis Team were recognized on Thursday as the Mountain West announced the 2012 All-Conference Team. The MW awards are selected by the league's eight head coaches.
"Veronica and Simona are well deserving of the All-Conference wawards they recieved," said head coach Dean Clower. "This is recognition of where we are as a team and the bright future we have as a program. We look forward continuing their success the rest of this season and years to come."
Sophomore Veronica Popovici and junior Simona Synkova were named First Team All-Conference in singles play, while they were selected to the All-Conference Doubles Team as well. It's the third time in school history that a player has won back to back singles awards and the first time that a player has won the doubles award three seasons in a row.
For Popovici, a native of Piatra Neamt, Romania, it's the second year in a row she has earned the award and the fourth straight year a Cowgirl has been named to the All-Conference team. She is currently 20-13 overall in singles and 22-11 in doubles play. This spring, she has a 10-11 mark in singles, while finishing the MWC season 3-4 at the number one position.
A native of Brastislava, Slovakia, Synkova garners All-MW singles honors for the first time in her career. She reached the 20-win mark for the second year in a row, while recording a 13-9 mark in spring play. Her conference record was 5-2 which included a five match winning streak.
Popovici and Synkova have a record of 21-9 overall, while going 12-8 during the spring. They won the ITA Mountain Regional Tournament in the fall and defeated the number one team at the time in the country Shannon Matthews and Kristy Frilling of Notre Dame in dual action. Playing at the number one position, the duo also finished with a 4-3 mark in MWC action. It's the first such honor for Popovici and the third for Synkova.
The Cowgirls, who are seeded fourth, opened up the 2012 MW Tournament with a 4-0 victory over the Air Force Academy Falcons. They will now take on the top seed TCU Horned Frogs, on Saturday, April 28. The match is set for 3:00 p.m. MT.
