Zoller brings home gold from Lander Sprint Triathlon

Aug 13, 2014 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Riverton resident Karen Zoller is a perfect one-for-one at the Lander Sprint Triathlon.

Zoller had enough left in the tank to finish first Saturday in 1:13.48 for the top spot in the women's category.

In the men's division, Jason Crompton won the title in 57:27.

The race included a 750-meter swim, a 19k bike ride and a 5k run.

First timer

It was the fourth summer in a row Lander has put on a triathlon but just the first time Zoller had entered it.

"When I was young in my early days, I did (triathlons)," Zoller said. "Now that I'm getting older, I thought that I would try one again."

Competitors race against the clock.

"You really don't know the other times because we were in different heats," Zoller said.

Kelsey Cardwell finished second in the women's division (1:17.50).

"I was so new to the competition that I really didn't know who to look for," Zoller said. "I just looked at trying to get my own personal record.

"I was happy when I found out," Zoller said.

Misty Atnip placed third with a time of 1:24.26.

Course

The swim portion of the triathlon was 15 laps.

"The course was definitely challenging, but it was a fun course," Zoller said. After the swimming leg of the triathlon, racers jumped on their bikes in the transition area in the parking lot of the swimming pool.

"They had the transition area organized," Zoller said. "You can find your bike quick and get out."

The 19k bike ride took place on Squaw Creek / Baldwin Creek Road loop.

"There was like a slow grade on the bike course, then you came down," Zoller said.

"When you came down, you didn't have to look at the finish line forever."

The racers completed the event with a 5k run on the south side of town. Zoller liked that the least.

"For me, (the difficulty) was the running part," Zoller said. "The run is not my strongest because I'm more like a swimmer and bike rider."
