Aug 20, 2014 - From staff reportsTwo Riverton municipal races are shaping into close contests for the general election after tight primary voting Tuesday.
For mayor, former Riverton City Councilman Lars Baker edged current Councilman Rich Gard by three votes, 1,090 to 1,087. They will meet again in the Nov. 4 general election to determine the successor to retiring Mayor Ron Warpness.
Two other past council members also staged a close race for the open Ward 2 council slot. Sarah Kalbach outpolled Lee Martinez 384 to 360 in a contest which also will be repeated in November.
Riverton's other council openings drew just one candidate apiece for the primary. Appointed incumbent Martin Cannan advances in Ward 3, appointed incumbent Kyle Larson moves on in Ward 1, and first-time candidate Mike Bailey was unopposed in the other Ward 3 campaign.
Write-in votes were received in all of the unopposed races.
