RHS girls drill two rebounds, then hang on with 2-1 win over

In soccer, as in basketball, offensive rebounds can turn into easy scores.

That was the case Saturday in Casper as Marcia Ashdown fired two left-footed shots during the second half that the Casper Kelly Walsh goalkeeper couldn't handle. Taylor Paskett-Krause and Alexis Oaks both scored off the rebounds to give the Lady Wolverines a huge 2-1 Class 4-A West road win.

"The first half ended scoreless. We played reasonably well. Neither team generated a lot of opportunities in the first half. The second half it turned around," Lady Wolverine head coach Rick Bergstedt said.

Riverton scored first in the 58th minute when Ashdown, unable to shoot well with her right foot because of a nagging hamstring injury, turned and hit what Bergstedt termed a "rocket" toward the net from the left side.

"All she (the keeper) could do was parry it away. She scrambled for the ball, and Taylor scrambled for the ball and caught up to it with her right foot from four yards out," Bergstedt said.

The Lady Wolverines scored in almost the same fashion in the 67th minute when the keeper again tried to parry away an Ashdown shot.

"Lexi (Oaks) just beat her to the ball from five yards out," Bergstedt said.

The Lady Trojans didn't quit, according to Bergstedt, and scored in the 69th minute and finished with a flourish.

"They ended up with eight corner kicks, and most of those came in the last 10-15 minutes of the game. We didn't play with quite the confidence I had hoped for. We panicked and didn't stay as cool as we should have. But we were happy with they way the kids played. We passed the ball more thoughtfully in the second half," Bergstedt said.

Home match Monday

The Lady Wolverines will make up a match Monday with conference leader Casper Natrona that was postponed due to predicted high winds Friday.

The match is set to kick off at Wolverine Field at 6 p.m.
