May 2, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports EditorTraci Hinman, Jacalyn Walker, Lacey Tech and Devin Nicholls pushed Central Wyoming College to a regional women's rodeo title on Sunday in Laramie.
The four helped the Rustlers score 3,063.33 points on their way to victory.
CWC jumped out to a lead in the fall season and held off the rest of the competition in the spring.
The rodeo season is made up of 10 rodeos. There were five rodeos in the fall season, and five more in the spring season.
"We pretty much had it wrapped up going into the Laramie rodeo," CWC rodeo coach Rick Smith said. "They are such a great group of kids. I'm just happy for them."
Chadron State College finished second (2,483.33), Gillette College ended third (2,325) and Northeastern Junior College finished fourth (2,243.33).
"The thing about region is that if you make the College National Finals Rodeo, you are going to be tough," Smith said. "They will be able to compete in Casper."
The last regional title for the women's squad was in 2005.
"All them contributed to the win," Smith said.
The top two squads qualify for the College National Finals Rodeo planned for the middle of June at the Casper Events Center.
"We are in a good position to go into the College National Finals Rodeo," Smith said. "They are all battled tested. They know how to go about getting ready for it."
CWC owned the goat tying event in the regional standings.
Hinman won the regional title by rolling up 965 points in the regular season. "Traci is the leader of the women's team," Smith said. "Traci is special to me because she has been our team captain for all four years. She is a tremendous leader." Eastern's Shelby Winchell finished second (755 points), and Jordan Thurston of Gillette College came in third (730 points). The top three individuals in each event qualify for the CNFR if they aren't on the top two teams. Tech finished fourth (678.3), Walker was fifth (490) and Nicholls came in eighth (255). Tech and Hinman have been with the Rustlers the past four years. Junior college competitors are permitted four years of eligibility in college rodeo.
Nicholls finished fourth in the chase for the women's all-around title (615 points).
The Riverton High School graduate had eighth-place finishes in goat tying (210) and breakaway roping (255).
