RHS wrestlers nip Lander

Riverton High School junior Dawson Steeds silenced the vocal wrestling crowd Thursday night at Bob Carey Memorial Fieldhouse in Lander when he pinned Lander Valley High School's Kegan Wells in the third period of the heavyweight match to seal a dramatic victory.

The cross county rivalry was deadlocked at 30-30 after the first 13 matches to set the stage for Steeds. With his pin, the final score was Riverton 36, Lander 30.

RHS came into the dual ranked No. 5 in Class 4-A, and LVHS is No. 4 in Class 3-A.

"I was pretty nervous," said Steeds, who went out for wrestling the first time last year. "Kegan is getting better every day. I knew that I had to come out tough."

RHS coach Jay Galey had a feeling the dual it was going to come down to the match between Steeds and Wells.

"Dawson really came through for us at the end," Galey said. "In that situation all we needed was a win. The pin was a bonus."

Heavyweight spotlight

Wells, a sophomore, was in the lineup because senior heavyweight Jordan Hanson injured his foot a couple of weeks ago in practice. Hanson won the Class 3-A heavyweight state title last year and is going to wrestle next year at University of Wyoming.

Wells took the Ron Thon Memorial junior varsity division title last weekend in Riverton, and is ranked No. 3 in Class 3-A. Steeds is No. 5 in Class 4-A. Steeds also pinned Wells earlier in the season.

In the pressure-packed dual on Thursday, Steeds scored two points on a takedown, and three more on a near fall for a 5-0 lead after the first period.

"I was just focused, and I worked on scrambling," Steeds said. "It took off a little pressure getting to a good start. I knew that I had to keep wrestling."

Steeds and Wells went scoreless in the second period.

"We were just both tired in the second period," Steeds said.

Steeds found enough energy to get the pin at the 5:06 mark in the third period.

"I just tried to use what my coaches taught me and whatever I could for the pin," Steeds said.

The Wolverines were up 30-27 on the scoreboard with two matches left when Lander's Brodie Schneider challenged Lane Savage at 220 pounds. Schneider just won the Ron Thon title last Saturday, while Savage finished fifth. Savage had pinned Schneider earlier in the season.

Schneider scored two points in first period Thursday on a takedown. Schneider added two more points on a reversal in the period and one more in the third on an escape for a 5-0 win.

Riverton's Drew Leach edged Joey Malek 6-5 at 160 pounds. Malek was ahead 4-1 in the second period before Leach scored two points on a reversal and three more on a near fall.

Riverton's Gavin Wilson wrestled "up" at 120 pounds to pick up a rematch win over Ty Alexander 5-0. Wilson beat Alexander last week in the semifinals at 113 pounds at the Ron Thon.

"Gavin didn't practice all week because he was sick," Galey said. "We weren't sure he was even going to wrestle. I love his effort."

Ahren Wempen RHS recorded a 9-4 victory for RHS vs. Derek Debolt at 126 pounds.

Michael Menzies of Riverton pinned Noah Rohrbacher in the 132-pound weight class at a time of 4:38.

In the 145-pound class, Riverton's Beau Batista won a 4-3 decision over Garret Maser. Batista and Maser were tied at 3-3 after two periods. Batista scored an escape in the third for the win.

TJ Galey added a quick pin at 171 pounds for the Wolverines over Kyle LaTorre in a time of 1:12.

Riverton's Reece Prosser scored six more points on a pin vs Robert Sloss in the 182-pound weight class. Menzies and Prosser are both freshman.

"Our young guys stepped up," Galey said.
