Riverton Little League season starts
May 8, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor
The Cardinals and the A's opened the Riverton Little League season in the victory column on Monday night to begin the 16-game baseball season at Ron Saban Complex.
The A's took care of the Yankees 20-4, while the Cardinals beat the Cubs 11-4. The teams played in the Major League Division for players 11-12 years old.
"We are excited and relieved to get the season started," Riverton Little League president Jason Muehler said. "We were relieved because of just how hard the board has worked and especially how hard Amber Hinkle (player agent) has worked. It was great to hear the umpires say play ball."
The Rockies round out the five-team league.
"I think that the major league is going to be a balanced league," Muehler said.
Muehler and Jeremy Martinez are on the coaching staff of the A's.
Mike Fisher and Cory Higgs manage the Cardinals. Jeremy Saltsgaver and Jamie Frazier guide the Cubs.
"We have a lot of great coaches that are aware of how important it's to keep the arms healthy," Muehler said.
Shane Lassiter and Travis Draper coach the Rockies. Scott Fabricus and Ryan Wilcox have signed to coach the Yankees.
"I would like to see the number of teams increase,"Muehler said. "For right now, five is a decent number."
The Yankees and the Rockies play on Wednesday. The Cubs and the Athletics tangle in the other game. Both games start at 6 p.m.
"We will be starting doubleheaders in June," Muehler said.
Ridge McCoy of the A's belted a three-run homer over the fence early in the game vs. the Yankees to set the tempo in the season opener.
The A's scored five in the fourth and seven more in the fifth for the 16-run victory.
Dalton Baldes, Jevon Brown, and Chase Garcia all pitched for the A's.
In the seven-run win, Matt Fisher went the distance throwing six innings.
Fisher had 12 strikeouts and gave up five hits. The Cardinals were up 6-2 after two innings.
"My pitcher took control and kept the game under control," Cardinals coach Mike Fisher said. "Matt had good control. He had a lot of strikes. He stayed ahead of the hitters."
Hayden Wempen hit a solo shot over the fence late in the game for the Cardinals.
"We have been waiting for Hayden to break out in practice, and he did it in the game," Fisher said.
The Angels, Diamondbacks, Giants, Orioles, Royals and Twins are in the Minor League. The league is for 9-10-year-olds.
The coaching staff for the Angels is Jake Olheiser and TJ Vaughn. Draper and Martin DeVries coach the Diamondbacks staff.
The coaches for the Giants are Jeremy Martinez and David Kellner. Jim Hinkle and Nick McKiernan coach the Orioles.
Selmer Murfitt and Randy Perry are with the Royals. Muehler and Scott Schoening guide the Twins.
The league opens on Tuesday night with the Angles vs. the Twins, and the Orioles vs. the Royals. Both games go at 6 at Ron Saban Complex.
