May 23, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports EditorTennis players Marty Conrad of Lander and Kristi Lamb of Riverton are ranked No. 1 Wyoming at the 3.5 mixed doubles level.
Conrad said the rankings are for the entire year. They won't change until December.
In the past year, the Fremont County team won titles in Cody, Cheyenne and Laramie and placed second in Casper and Cheyenne.
"We work together and we play off each other's points," Conrad said. "When you play all year around like we do, it shows during the summer and tournaments."
The Laramie team of Troy and Mario Ibarra is ranked No. 2 in the mixed doubles.
"We want to continue to play and travel around," Conrad said. "That is the biggest asset that we have. We love to travel and love the competition."
The levels above 3.5 in Wyoming are 4.0, 4.5 and 5.0.
"It goes beyond the tennis courts," Conrad said. "I go out and lift weights, run and do other things to keep myself in shape."
Conrad and Lamb have been playing together the last four years.
"We tend to play the matches more for fun," Lamb said. "We just play our toughest game wherever we are."
Lamb, who works as an assistant tennis coach for Riverton High School, said she and Conrad are about mid-level players in the state.
Other players ranked at the 3.5 level are from Laramie, Cheyenne and Casper.
"We have some competitive matches and some that could go either way until the very last point," Lamb said.
The two play in a lot of tournaments.
"We are willing to travel to the long distances to play the matches," Lamb said.
Lamb said tennis is starting to get more popular in Fremont County.
"At least in Riverton, we are getting more younger kids in junior high and the elementary age level that want to take tennis lessons and show interest in the sport," Lamb said.
The mixed doubles team is entered in a tournament Friday through Sunday in Jackson.
