Feb 13, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets Sports EditorLander Valley High seniors Dalton Marrow and Brodie Schneider picked up individual wrestling wins for the final time against Riverton on Thursday, but it wasn't enough to pull out a team victory at Bob Carey Memorial Fieldhouse.
The Wolverines walked home on top 36-30 in the showdown between the two Fremont County schools.
"We had some opportunities to win some matches that didn't go our way," LVHS coach Nick Fulton said. "You sure can't take anything away from the Wolverines. They got the better of us in the close ones."
In the final match of the evening, Riverton High School junior Dawson Steeds pinned Tiger sophomore Keegan Wells in the third period to clinch the win.
Wells is in the lineup because Class 3-A top-ranked heavyweight Jordan Hanson is out with an injured foot.
"Keegan has been doing some good things" Fulton said. "Steeds is just a little more experienced kid. Keegan can hold his head high."
LVHS took the weekend off to rest up for the Class 3-A West regional tournament set for Friday and Saturday at Bob Carey Memorial Fieldhouse.
"We just have to be able to win those close ones next week and the week after," Fulton said.
Lander's Andrew Von Rein registered the first win of the dual for the home squad with a pin in 1:03 at the 106-pound weight class.
Marrow pinned TJ Turner in a time of 1:43 at 138 pounds.
In the 152-pound weight class, Jake Miller had the shortest night when he pinned Rudy Batista in :25 seconds.
"Jake is on tear right now," Fulton said.
Lander's Ross Sloss came out on top 6-4 over Jacob Flescher in the 195-pound weight class.
The two wrestlers were tied at 4-4 after the first two periods. In the final period, Sloss scored a two-point reversal for the win.
In the 220-pound match, Schneider blanked Lane Savage 5-0. Schneider scored two points in the first period, two more in the second period. In the third, Schneider added one on an escape to keep Savage scoreless. Schneider was coming off a Ron Thon Memorial title last week, while Savage finished fifth. The win avenged an earlier loss to Savage, who had pinned Schneider when the two teams wrestled in Riverton.
Fulton moved Ty Alexander up to 120-pound weight class to face Riverton's Gavin Wilson. Wilson came away with a 5-0 decision.
Wilson beat Alexander in the 113-pound semifinals of the Ron Thon.
"We wrestled tough with Wilson," Fulton said.
