Peil, Roberts and Vigil named soccer 3-A all-state for Lander

May 27, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Derek Peil, Marcus Vigil, Austin Roberts and Kyle Leeman of Lander Valley High School are Class 3-A all-state soccer players. The team was announced last week.

Vigil, Peil and Roberts were named to the 2011 all-state team as well.

All three graduated from LVHS on May 20.

The Tigers finished the season knocking off Buffalo 4-1 at the Class 3-A state tournament third-place match at the Big Horn Equestrian Center.

Henry Austin, Casey Winger and Trapper Lee were selected to the Class 3-A East all-conference second team. Austin scored three goals and three assists. Lee had 10 goals and three assists.

Winger finished with three goals and three assists.

All-state selections

Peil played the destroyer position for the Tigers. He missed seven games because of sickness or injury but finished strong for Lander.

"Derek is a big strong, physical and hard-working kid," LVHS soccer coach Dan Howlett said. "When he didn't play, that made a big difference. We were a pretty young defense. "

Peil collected six goals and two assists.

"One of Derek's strong points was that he could move up on set plays," Howlett said.

Roberts missed nine games due to an ankle injury he suffered in basketball season.

Roberts had six goals and eight assists in nine games he played.

"In the nine games that he played, he was very productive for us," Howlett said. "He gives you great speed and great power. One of the things that he does is control the balls to out outside forwards."

Vigil gave up 34 goals and had 154 saves.

"Marcus struggled a little bit because we had a very young defense," Howlett said. "A lot of the goals that came in on him where from five yards in."

Howlett said Vigil played well in the three matches at state.

"He came up huge at the state tournament," Howlett said. "He had a great game against Buffalo. He had a good game against Worland. He had a great overtime and shutout with Star Valley."

Leeman delivered a team-high 14 goals. Leeman will play two more years for Howlett.

"He has great ball control and great speed," Howlett said. "He finished very well."
